STAR ATLAS

Design Direction, Experience Design, Game Design,
Forward Facing Apps, and Collateral

Case Study

Challenge:

Most projects come with a defined scope. A feature to design, a problem to solve, a product to ship. Star Atlas was different. As a blockchain-based space exploration game with an ecosystem spanning gameplay, economy, web platforms, and a fully realized fictional universe, there was no single brief to respond to. The challenge was one of scale and continuity, specifically how to establish and maintain a cohesive design identity across an entire product ecosystem when that ecosystem is growing in multiple directions at once and the vision itself is still taking shape.

Solution:

Coming in as Design Director meant being part of essentially everything. Rather than waiting for work to arrive, the priority from the start was to get ahead of it by building the design systems, standards, and strategic foundations that would allow the team to move with confidence. This meant defining the visual and interaction language of the product early, leading experience architecture across game UI, web applications, and marketplace interfaces, and making sure that every surface, regardless of who built it or when, felt like it belonged to the same world. A big part of the role was also being present at the earliest stages of any new initiative, working through requirements with product and engineering before design work formally began. That kind of early involvement consistently led to better outcomes and fewer costly pivots down the road.

Result:

Across every product Star Atlas has put in front of users, there is a recognizable design identity, polished, intentional, and consistent in a way that reflects the ambition of the overall vision. The design systems built during this engagement created a shared foundation that helped teams move faster and maintain quality across simultaneous workstreams. Within the blockchain gaming space, the visual and experiential quality of the product has stood out, and that reputation is something that was built deliberately, one decision at a time.

Highlights:

The breadth of this engagement is what makes it one of the more meaningful chapters of my career. Serving as Design Director across a game universe, one that touches gameplay systems, economic tools, web platforms, and brand identity all at once, is not something that comes along often. It pushed me to operate beyond execution and think at a systems and strategy level constantly. But more than the scale, what has stayed with me is what happens when design is genuinely embedded in an organization rather than bolted on. The work gets better, the teams get aligned faster, and the products that come out the other side carry a quality that people notice. That outcome, more than any single screen or feature, is what I am most proud of here.
